Agricultural Mechanics and Metal Technologies is designed to develop an understanding of agricultural mechanics as it relates to safety and skills in tool operation, electrical wiring, plumbing, carpentry, fencing, concrete, and metal working techniques. To prepare for careers in agricultural power, structural, and technical systems, students must attain academic skills and knowledge; acquire technical knowledge and skills related to power, structural, and technical agricultural systems and the industry; and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, industry certifications, and industry expectations.

The Welder program of study within the Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Career Cluster® provides helpful information, including the core courses and career-related electives in high school that will help prepare students for their career goals. This document is designed for students, but can also be used by administrators, counselors, teachers, business and industry representatives, and parents.

● Animal Handling: Knowledge of animal behavior and proper animal handling techniques to ensure safety of humans and animals

● Critical Thinking: Analyzing information and evaluating situations with accuracy to make informed decisions regarding animal welfare

● Animal Science Knowledge: An overview of the field of animal science 

● Communication: Effective verbal and written communication for interacting with clients, agricultural professionals, and educating the public sector

Industry-Based Certifications: 

● Elanco Fundamentals of Animal Science 

● TVMA Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) Level 1 

Entry-Level Careers: 

With the skills and potential certifications gained from the program, graduates may pursue entry-level positions such as: 

● Veterinary Assistant: Assisting with the daily duties in a veterinary office

● Kennel Technician: Caretaking of animals at boarding facilities and veterinary offices 

● Feed Store Associate: Encouraging customers to purchase feed store products for their home, farm, and ranch

● Livestock Show Intern: Engaging with the public at major livestock shows across the state
