Program Overview
The Cosmetology program trains learners in the basic manipulative skills, safety judgments, proper work habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to obtain licensure and for competency in entry level positions in cosmetology or a related career field.
Objectives
Upon completion of the program requirements, the graduate will be able to:
1. Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence
2. Practice effective communications skills, visual poise, and proper grooming
3. Discuss the importance of delivering worthy service for value received in an employer–employee relationship
4. Develop effective work habits in the interest of safety and infection control
5. Perform the basic manipulative skills in the areas of hair, skin, and nail care
6. Demonstrate the basic analytical skills needed to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application to match the client’s overall image
7. Apply learned theory, technical information, and related matter to ensure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures within the scope of the job
8. Identify new and current information related to skills, trends, and methods for career development in cosmetology and related fields to continue to achieve career success
Instruction
The credit-hour education is provided through a sequential set of learning units that address both theoretical knowledge and the specific practical skills necessary for certification or licensure, graduation, and entry-level job skills. Student salon equipment, implements, and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Each learner will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative, and productive career-oriented activities. The program is presented through comprehensive lesson plans that reflect effective educational methods and follow Milady Standard Cosmetology. Subjects are presented by means of interactive lecture, demonstration, distance learning, learner participation, and learner activities. Audiovisual aids, guest speakers, field trips, projects, activities, and other learning methods are used throughout the program.
Industry Based Certification
- Upon successful completion of the cosmetology program students are eligible to take the state cosmetology written and practical licensing exam.
